32years old British Dillian Whyte’s world title cravings vanished in the blink of an eye as he was knocked out by 40years old Russian boxer Alexander Povetkin in a stunning upset in the round five.
The Jamaica Born British boxer only needed to beat the ageing Russian to assent his shot at Tyson Fury or Deontay Wilder next year.
Dillian Whyte was in control through the first four rounds as he out-jabbed his challenger with full domination before the round five.
Povetkin was dropped twice in the fourth round, the writing looked to be on the wall for the 40-year-old Russian.
But he proves there is life in the old dog yet when he landed a breathtaking left uppercut which left Whyte out cold on the canvas.
The 40-year-old Russian was obviously on borrowed time until one perfect mind-boggling punch changed everything. Whyte hit the canvas hard, and the referee immediately called it a finish.
“I didn’t think I would finish the fight like this,” said Povetkin after the fight. “But after four rounds I still felt okay, I still felt confident even after the knockdowns.
“I watched his fights and took into account that he was open to uppercuts, both from the right and the left. It was probably the best finish of my career.”
